These are the alternatives under consideration by the Jones family. This data sheet includes exact passenger capacity and much of the key information for the purchase price, fuel costs and style criteria. With a bit of investigation, the Joneses should be able to pin those things down pretty well. They also need information about maintenance cost, resale value, cargo capacity and safety, but that should be readily available on the Internet. They can get as much or as little information as they care to, since the AHP can deal with anything from educated guesses to absolutely perfect measurements. (Needless to say, the better the information, the better the decision result. But whatever the Joneses get, AHP can help integrate it into their decision.)

Safety
Background. "Safety" in an automobile consists of many interrelated factors such as crash avoidance ability and crash survivability measured by tests involving mechanical dummy passengers. Because crashes can happen (or not) in so many ways, and because the tests are necessarily limited to a few standard situations, the determination of "safety" for a given model is a difficult and speculative task.
Nevertheless, the standard tests and measurements can be useful in comparing models. Several organizations acquire and consolidate this information for the benefit of consumers and insurers.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has included each one of them in its Top Safety Picks list for 2008, a list including only the models with the very highest safety ratings in the IIHS' rigorous rating system.
